March Madness in Indiana
I am very much aware of "March Madness" basketball tournament, although I have have not ever been very interested in it. I have had the typical work polls and choosing my teams. I never really followed all the teams, sometimes that worked out to be a good thing. Invariably there's an upset so little Abe randomly pointing at teams on a paper to win, could actually be the same results as an avid sports fan choosing possible winners using skill and knowledge. At any rate , it's fun to watch. I never realized how important basketball was to Indiana. I know that sounds silly. Indiana being pegged as Basketball Everything. You know, the movie Hoosiers, Larry Byrd, Bobby Knight all that stuff. It just hit me these last two days when I was working at the hospital. There was patient after patient watching these basketball games. They were patients all ages, male and female, not missing a single basket.
I had expected the excitement over the IU game. I had little old ladies inviting me to sit and watch with them when I got my work done. The game was on so late, they didn't care, they staying up and watching every play. Each room I entered the games were on. Then I thought well maybe the TV was really set by the staff who were interested, so I'd ask questions to see if they were really followed. Well, how do you think IU will do against Gonzala? Well, this old lady said to me, they don't do well on the road, and they have had so many close games, but loose in the second half. Ummm...I think I remember that happening a few times. Okay, I ask about Ohio State, cause I sorta kinda know what they have done...they are ranked number one. Oh yea, the lady said that was a good game. We lost it at the end. Alright, I think she's right!
Then today, one of my patients said well we have two Indiana teams playing today. Who are they? I asked. Da.... Notre Dame and Purdue. These Hoosiers, it's not just one school they care about when it comes to basketball, all their Indiana teams make them winners. Well Notre Dame lost. Bummer. We still have our others to look forward to. That's pretty cool. FYI, my little old ladies ranged in ages of 72 to 86 years young and the men were from 61 to 90. Loving their basketball and loving their teams.
